EPA 608 Type II Guide: High Pressure & Very High Pressure Systems
Type II certification is required for technicians servicing or disposing of equipment that operates at high pressures. This primarily includes residential split systems, heat pumps, and commercial refrigeration units.
Understanding Leak Rate Requirements
The EPA has strict "trigger rates" for leaks in systems containing 50 pounds or more of refrigerant. If these rates are exceeded, the owner must repair the leak within 30 days.
| Sector | Leak Rate Threshold |
|---|---|
| Commercial Refrigeration | 20% |
| Industrial Process Refrigeration (IPR) | 30% |
| Comfort Cooling (Air Conditioning) | 10% |
Defining Major Repairs
According to the EPA, a major repair is any service involving the removal of the compressor, condenser, evaporator, or any auxiliary heat exchanger coil. For Type II systems, you must reach specific vacuum levels before performing these repairs.
Evacuation and Recovery Requirements
When using recovery equipment manufactured after November 15, 1993, technicians must meet the following levels for high-pressure systems:
- Systems with < 200 lbs of refrigerant: 10 inches of Hg vacuum.
- Systems with > 200 lbs of refrigerant: 15 inches of Hg vacuum.
